Sales, Marketing & Management Ideas - Vol. 006 By: Tim Williams

If you would like to know how to get technical support staff to respond fast then read on …

Getting technical support staff in large corporations to respond to your technical queries in a timely manner these days can be a real challenge and it often becomes a very frustrating experience.

I am a massive fan of LinkedIn however their helpdesk seems to be significantly understaffed at the moment. I used to get a response to any queries sent to LinkedIn within 24 to 48 hours; however these days those response times are taking 3 to 5 days or even longer.

A ‘Y Gen’ friend of mine suggested that I use social media to contact them to speed up the process of getting a response. I used to think that twitter was all about celebrities and rock stars however I was wrong.

Most large corporations have a team of dedicated staff monitoring their twitter accounts and are very concerned about their public image.

If you send an email to LinkedIn’s helpdesk, the only people that can SEE the email are the sender and the recipient.

If you send a Tweet however, the whole world can SEE what you are saying.

That’s the POWER of social media and it works!

Examples # 1

Let’s say you have a problem with your LinkedIn account that you want the helpdesk to resolve. This is the process that I now follow:
  1. Visit LinkedIn’s Help Centre - http://help.linkedin.com/app/home/
  2. Enter a question or a keyword and click search
  3. If you can’t find an answer, then click on the contact LinkedIn customer support link
  4. Fill in the form as required
  5. Add a Screenshot to highlight the problem using Microsoft’s Snipping Tool
  6. Submit your question to raise a LinkedIn ticket number
Note: To access the snipping tool, click on the Windows start button and type [snipping tool] into the search box.

If you don’t get a response from LinkedIn’s Help Centre within a timely manner then send them a friendly Tweet referencing your unresolved ticket number:

@ LinkedInhelp I am a fan of LinkedIn however I’m having trouble getting a response to ticket number [ 130319-019861]Can you please help?

LinkedIn’s help Centre will respond very quickly, not in days - but within hours.

Examples # 2

Let’s say you have a problem with Telstra and your BigPond account. Don’t waste your time calling BigPond’s Technical Support Department on 13 39 33, Tweet them instead:

@BigPondTeam Having problems with my Internet connection / no one seems to want  to help / please direct message me with someone who can

I have been told that Telstra have a team of six people monitoring the [@BigPondTeam] twitter account so it won’t take long to get a response.

Here is a list of some other helpful twitter accounts:
  • @QFcustomercare
  • @JetstarAirways
  • @VirginAustralia
  • @optusbusiness
  • @ANZ_AU
  • @Westpac
  • @NetBank
  • @NAB
Good Luck :-)

Linking … LinkedIn Company Pages to Your Profile

Before you add a Current or Past position, create a Company Page if one does not exist. If one does exist then select it from the Company Name drop down box as you type the first few letters.

If the company you choose has a Company Page on LinkedIn then a small icon will appear next to the entry on your profile. Anyone reading your profile will be able to hover their mouse over these icons to initiate a Pop Up screen containing more details about the company.

If you would like to know how to narrow your LinkedIn search results then read on …

Boolean logic allows you to combine words and phrases into search statements to retrieve documents / records via Internet search engines (browsers ... IE, Chrome, FireFox, Safari) or from searchable databases.

Most database searching is based on the principles of Boolean logic. Boolean logic refers to the logical relationship among search terms, and is named after the British-born Irish mathematician George Boole.

LinkedIn’s contents can also be searched according to the rules of computer database searching.

Boolean logic consists of three logical operators:
  • AND
  • OR
  • NOT  or The minus sign (-)
You can use individual Boolean logic operators or combinations of operators in specific search fields to narrow down your LinkedIn search results.

Example # 1: Advanced People Search / AND

If you only want to find results with both the terms ‘sales’ and also ‘marketing’ then type – [ sales AND marketing ] in the Title field

Example # 2: Advanced People Search / OR

If you want to find results with either the term ‘sales’ or ‘marketing’ then type – [ sales OR marketing ] in the Title field

Example # 3A: Advanced People Search / NOT

If you want to find results with the term ‘sales’ but not ‘sales and also ‘marketing’ then type – [ sales NOT marketing ] in the Title field

Example # 3B: Advanced People Search / the minus sign (-)

If you want to find results with the term ‘sales’ but not ‘sales and also ‘marketing’ then type – [ sales -marketing ] in the Title field

Note: Title results are derived from both the Professional Headline and Current Positions on LinkedIn profiles.

EMAIL ADDRESS VALIDATION

If you have a need to Validate a List of Email Addresses then read on …

There are dozens of businesses on the web who offer these services however our favourite provider is Cobisi (based in Italy) who developed EmailVerify.NET in 2006; arguably the world’s best email validation software.
Cobisi’s hosted email validation service allows you to perform full email hygiene and cleansing, using the following inbuilt tools:
  • advanced syntax verification, according to the most up-to-date Internet IETF standards;
  • DNS validations, including MX record(s) lookup;
  • disposable e-mail address (DEA) validation;
  • SMTP connection and availability checking;
  • mailbox existence checking, with greylisting and temporary unavailability support; and
  • catch-all testing
Using their hosted service is very easy and involves just three (3) simple steps.

1. Upload your list of email addresses

Upon creating a new email validation job, you will be asked to provide the service with one or more files containing the email addresses you wish to validate:
  • plain text format  ( .txt)
  • one email address per line
2. Choose the accuracy level you need

After that, you will have the opportunity to choose the level of accuracy you need for your validation, and see, along with each one of the proposed levels, the final price for the service including the volume discount you are eligible for:
  • Approx. $0.01 per email address / Paypal or Credit Card
  • Pay as you go / No contracts!
3. Download the detailed report

Once the payment is completed, the service will immediately begin validating your email addresses and will allow you to track the progress for the job, optionally alerting you via email at its completion.

As soon as the job finishes, you will have access to a detailed validation report that you will easily be able to download and save to your computer for further analysis.

How to Block Your Phone Number Being Displayed When Calling Someone

It’s BEST to always DISPLAY your number when calling people however if you or your staff need to occasionally or permanently block your phone number then read on …

Enjoy!

Tim

Sometimes there’s a genuine need to call someone and prevent your phone number from being displayed.

Perhaps you’ve received a call from a number you don’t recognise, and you want to call back to check who it is without revealing your number.

You can do this on both your home phone and mobile phone. There’s two (2) methods of hiding your number from being displayed – either on a call by call basis, or permanently.

1. Block your number on a call by call basis
  • From a home phone, dial 1831 then the number you’re calling
  • From a mobile phone, dial #31# then the number you’re calling
2. Block your number permanently

For mobile phones, most phones include a “show my caller ID” settings in the settings, which you can turn off.
  • For an iPhone, this is located in Settings > Phone > Show My Caller ID
  • For Android phones, this is located in Phone > Settings > Call Settings > More Settings > Caller ID (or similar)
For home phones, Telstra can hide your number when you call others permanently.

They can also block your details so that your name, phone number and address are not published in the White Pages directory or on directory assistance services.

A $2.93 monthly fee applies.

LinkedIn - Full Name Visibility

After 20+ years working in Sales, Marketing & Management roles; the most valuable lesson I have learnt is to be able too:

“Share BRILLIANT ideas with people that will HELP them!”

Each fortnight, I will be sharing my knowledge and experience with our subscribers.

The articles will be short and to the point.

Enjoy Vol. 001 below:

Tim

If you have every wondered why some LinkedIn search results don’t show the {surname} then read on …

If you have a FREE LinkedIn account or one of the entry level premium accounts then some of your search results will only display a {first name} and {last initial} and not the {full name}.

Example: Bill Smith v Bill S.

There are a couple of reasons why this happens:
  • Some members choose to only show a first name and last initial to non-1st degree connections
  • Full name visibility of 3rd degree or group connection functionality is not enabled
  • LinkedIn have restricted the ability to see full names for 3rd degree or group connection profiles to only a few of their premium account plans including:
  • Talent Finder and Talent Pro accounts for recruiters;
  • Executive and Sales Pro for sales professionals; and
  • Executive and Pro accounts for general business professionals
Full name visibility is an IMPORTANT feature to have because you can’t send an introduction letter or mail piece to Bill S.; you need to know Bill’s surname too.

The 3rd degree & group connections will also make up the largest part of your search results so you are missing out on a lot of valuable information by not having this feature enabled.

If you are serious about using LinkedIn and not a recruiter then I would recommend that you upgrade your personal LinkedIn account to an ‘Executive’ level premium account.

For further details visit: http://www.linkedin.com

PS: Click on the “Upgrade Your Account link” located at the bottom of their home page

LinkedIn Naming Convention (Keep It Simple!)

LinkedIn are very strict about their naming convention so don’t put a company name or something at the end of your name for advertising or marketing purposes.

If you need to contact LinkedIn’s customer service department and you haven't abided by their naming convention then they will not help you unless you rectify the error!
